RUN AFTER 155 IN CATALOG A good war-date Union officer's battle of Fredericksburg letter, 2pp. 4to., written by 2nd Lt. John E. Mason, Co. F, 9th New Hampshire Vols., "Camp opposite Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 18, 1862", to his niece Miss. Lestenah H. Stone of Dunbarton, N. H., in part: "…I have just got through with a hard battle and am safe and sound did not get even a scratch although at times I did not consider my life worth a pin. The loss of my Reg. in killed is four, two of them from my company, number of wounded 68, two of those of my Co. The loss of my division which is two brigades in killed and wounded is nine hundred and twenty five which is heavier than that of any other division that was in the battle. The names of the two that was killed of my Co. was Edgar W. Densmore of Nashua and Waterman S. Chapman of Rumney. Densmore was the Color Bearer of the Regt. and did his duty nobly. He was killed with a piece of a shell that passed through the strap that was over his shoulder to support the Color Standard and entered the left breast. He lived several hours after he was hit. Our army retreated back across the river to our old camp ground Monday night the fifteenth, the Rebels being too strong for us…I am obliged to you for the invitation to be at your house at Christmas but am afraid that I cannot be on hand although nothing would give me more pleasure than to be there and have a good time with you all…Jack." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor spotting, else VG.
