Williams, Seth (1822-1866) In 1864 Gen. Williams was transferred to the staff of Gen. Grant as acting inspector-general of the armies of the United States, and the same year he was made major-general of volunteers by brevet. Autograph Endorsement Signed “S. Williams, Agt” on the back of General Order No. 251, July 27, 1864, 1pp., VG. In part, “Headquarters Army of the Potomac, August 1, ‘64, Captain (John Emory) Parsons will report for duty ....” The GO also has an note attached to the front, “Dear John - You see from this that I must have known your school frinds grandfather Gen. E.D. Townsend ...” Of course Townsend issued the GO.
