Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865. Datelined, Murfreesboro, Jan. 9., , 1863, 3pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “I do not think the graves are as thick as they were at Perrysville. But are stretched along the road for five or six miles. But what presented the most destructive appearance was where the the trains were burned by the Rebel Cavalry. the trains were encamped along both sides of the road for 1-1/2 miles. Also the houses along the road were burned to the ground. destruction and desolation marks the whole road for miles ...The city of Murfreesboro is a beautiful and well built. The Rebels are not as many as they were in Perrysville .., I saw but 200 prisoners going to Nashville ... The Rebels were mostly boys and young men ...”
