Federal soldier’s letter written by John H. Gray, who enlisted into Indiana 101st Infantry, August 1862 and mustered out June 1865.Datelined, Chattanooga Tenn.., September 27th , 4pp., “John H. Gray”, in part, “... the fight last Saturday and Sunday 19 & 20. ..We suffered very much on Saturday as our Brigade commenced fighting with 1300 men and before dark had lost 500 in killed and wounded. We began about 2 o’clock Saturday and fought with Gen. VanCleve & Jeff Davis and after fighting hard, long and bloody for about two hours, we were repulsed and driven back about a mile losing one of our 12pound guns because the horses were shot down & we could not get it off the field. ... we poured one continuos stream of fire into the Reb lines, checking their progress for half an hour without any infantry to support us, but when the Rebs beheld the confusion among the infantry, they marched upon our right and left flank and fought and thus in less than ten minutes they did us all the damage... About eight o’clock, the cannons roar and the pickets fire told too plainly that the contest was ‘trembling to begin’. The long roll of musketry soon began to peal away to our left, telling of the ‘work of death’.... What musketry! Of an hour of calm, then an order to move the Division to such a point. .. Oh horror, the enemy are upon us! ...”
