War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Jewett P. Wellman, Co. A, 14th New Hampshire Vols., Frederick, Maryland, March 15, 1865, to his comrade Sergeant Lemuel F. Liscom, 14th New Hampshire, in part: "…I…am afraid you will become so much attached to the customs and especially the people of Savannah you will remain there after this cruel was is over and I'll never get a sight at you again. Oh! How about the election. Did you expect to go home? We did but were disappointed. Our furloughs were sent to the War Dept. and that was the last we have heard from them so our votes will not count…I am satisfied to remain where I am…Henry is driving the ambulance…Joseph has the care of a six mule team. Charles has the care of three horses. Supper Tom will be under his care now. Capt. Goddard was going to take him and one or two threes here to Savannah, but could not get transportation…Gen. Sheridan is up the Valley and…Early did not wish to see him and run away leaving his command to run or surrender…now Gen. Sheridan is having his own way with with none to molest or make him afraid. Things are going about right now. It is all [?] here not a [?] amongst the Germans. Some of them whom you are acquainted when you were with…do not say as much against the way in which the war is being carried on as they did…Jewett P. Wellman." The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Sergt. L. F. Liscom, Savannah, Ga, Co. A. 14 N. H. Vols.", is included. Overall near fine.
