TAYLOR Walter Herron (1838-1916) was an American banker, lawyer, soldier, politician, author, and railroad executive from Norfolk, Virginia. During the American Civil War, he fought with the Confederate States Army, became a key aide to General Robert E. Lee and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Document Signed "W.H. Taylor" on a Confederate Military Pass, 7-3/4" x 4-1/2", 1pp., Head Q Army N. Va., 7 July 1863 in full, "Permission is hereby granted Col. Fremantle of the British army to pass without the lines of this army. By command of Gen'l Lee, W.H. Taylor, adjt". General Sir Arthur James Lyon Fremantle GCMG CB KStJ (11 November 1835 - 25 September 1901) was a British Army officer and a notable British witness to the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Whilst holding the rank of "Captain and Lieutenant Colonel" he spent three months (from 2 April until 16 July 1863) in North America, travelling through parts of the Confederate States of America and the Union.
