LEE, George Washington Custis (1832- 1913), also known as Custis Lee, was the eldest son of Robert E. Lee and Mary Anna Custis Lee. His grandfather-George Washington Custis-was the step-grandson and adopted son of George Washington. He served as a Confederate general in the American Civil War, primarily as an aide-de-camp to President Jefferson Davis, and succeeded his father as president of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. War-date Confederate general Autograph Letter Signed "G.W.C. Lee" 1pp. quarto, Chaffin's Farm, March 14, 1865, with cover addressed to Major Carter, 2nd Regt L.D. Brigade, franked by Lee, and reads "My Dear Major. I really am not say as to the probability of my commanding a Division of Colored troops, nor whether an attempt will be made to raise any under present laws; but I can say that it will give me great pleasure to recommend you for appointment as field officer in any regiment that may be raised, if you so desire..." Fine condition.
