War-date Confederate Soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Bartlett Ellis Scarborough, 31st North Carolina Infantry, Died of Wounds received at Drewry's Bluff on May 15, 1864, 4pp. quarto, Camp 31st Regt. N.C. Troops, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, October 28, 1863, with cover addressed to a woman in Fayetteville, NC, it reads in part: "...Not only myself but the Regt is all enjoying good health at present. Our fare is tolerable though we have any amount of hard duty to do. I get 2 nights to rest in six and drill also. ...I have been here so tightly confined in camp and hearing the sound of cannons till I have almost forgotten all I ever saw or felt. ...You wanted to know if there was any sign of peace in or about Charleston. Miss L. peace has taken its everlasting flight from the Confederacy at present. I don't see any chance but to hang on till the last. That is all the comfort I have. The Yankees commenced the fight at this place last Monday. They keep up firing all the time from Battery Wagner, Gregg and also the Battery they have built between the two and 4 monitors. Their shots are at Sumter, Fort Johnson and now and then a shot in Charleston. They throwed 3 in the city yesterday, so I was told this morning...I can't get use to the balls flying around my head...I am getting worn out waiting for this war to end...And I am living a hard miserable life, destitute of all kinds of pleasure...I hope God will be with me and I may be spared to see this war ended..."
