The Chicago Defender is considered the leading race paper of its day. Each issue is 24pp, covers national news, sports and commentary very much from the view of the African American. These issues are WWII centered with reports of the Black soldiers. Various dates from January 9, 1943 through June 12, 1843. The presentation is high-end including Red headlines, plenty of photographs, easy to read. About 1/3 of the issues are separated at the spine, all pulpy. Great news coverage. Here are a few headlines: January 30, 1943 "Army Hero Wins Silver Star" reports of a Black soldier's feats; plus ... April 17, 1943 "Indict Cops in Lynching" from Georgia; plus, ... May 1, 1943 "Lynch Jury Whitewashes 3" as Mississippi jury acquits 3; plus, ... Name Warship For Naval Hero" as ship is named after Black Captain; plus, ... "Equal Pay Order" balances Blacks pay with Whites pay. The Chicago Defender is a Chicago-based online African-American newspaper. It was founded in 1905 by Robert S. Abbott and was once considered the "most important" newspaper of its kind.[1] Abbott's newspaper reported and campaigned against Jim Crow era violence and urged blacks in the American South to come north in what became the Great Migration.
