LEE, Robert E. (1807-1870). Commander in Chief of the Confederate Armies and one of the most revered figures in American history. Autograph Letter Signed, "RE Lee" 1-1/4p. octavo, Lexington, Virginia, November 17, 1865, addressed to Dr. Stary of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, and reads in most part: "...Genl. Rosser informs me that after the fight at Parkers Store on the 5 of May '64 the hospitals were established at Grove Church under your direction, to which all the wounded of both parties were carried. Have you any recollection of Capt. Luke McGuinn of the 5th N.Y. Cavy who it is stated was carried to the Cav. Hospitals...He is reported to have fallen in the Cav. fight of the 5 May '64 near Parkers Store. He at one time belonged to the 2nd U.S. Cav...under me in Texas. His wife whom I well know...has applied to me for information concerning his death, the attendant circumstances, etc. I should be obliged to you if you can give me the desired information..." Near fine condition. Luke McGuinn served as captain in the 5th New York Cavalry and was listed as Killed in Action on May 5, 1864 at Wilderness.
