Early war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Stephen A. Dodge, Co. D, 3rd Maine Vols. [KIA Chantilly, Va., Sept. 1, 1862], "Washington, District Columbia, June 8, 1861," to his "dear father", in part: "We arrived here all safe and sound. After leaving Augusta we…was received all along with great enthusiasm…[at] Boston…escorted to the Common and treated to a collection. They could not seem to for enough for us. Our company received marked attention from the people…[at] New York…the regiment was presented with a splendid flag [made by Tiffany & Co.] that cost $150…proceeded to Baltimore with loaded muskets…we marched through with fixed bayonets. We were not molested…I heard one boy sing out for Jeff Davis. Some of them looked very savage. We arrived here at eight…Friday night. Troops are stationed all along the railroad. I was through the Capitol building this morning. It is splendid beyond description…the Woolwich boys are all well…S. A. Dodge…direct to Maine third Regiment, Co. D…". The original U.
