A good loyal Western Virginia young lady's letter, 1 1/2pp. 4to., written by Mary A. Snapp, July 27, 1863, Frankfort, Ross Co., Ohio, back home to her loyal Union friends at Malden, Kanawha County, West Virginia concerning the battle of Wytheville, Va. and the death of many of their high ranking Union commander friends, reading, in part: "…about this county. People are friendly and sociable but I don't like to live in this state half as well as in Virginia…I have nothing of interest to write…than [there] has bin a great excitement in this state, for some time, about old Morgan. They have bin worrisome scared than hurt. They have…taken prisoners in every point. They have bin [?] totatle well satisfied…when we came out here I didn't think any person was gone to war, but now the boys are all after Morgan . I am so lonesome today I do whisk you were here…we would have…pleasant times…if Lieutenant Carpenter [most likely 1st Lt. William H. Carpenter 34th Ohio "Piatt's Zouaves" Vols.] would be about. Fanny, I we would have a nice time…don't you no that morning you went in the house an[d] didn't know that Carpenter was in the house till after you had went in. What a joke Molley had on you…write soon I want to no all about the fight [July 18, 1863]…at Wythville, [Virginia]. We got the paper in which we saw the account of Col. [John T.] Tolan[d] [34th Ohio Vols.] that he got killed, Captain Donaly of the 1[st] Va [1st West Virginia Cavalry] and Col. [William H.] Powell severely wounded. I [am] sorry to hear of Col. Toland['s] death. Poor Col. I expect he sold his life dearest eny other Colonel. I want to no how men of them got killed…an what become of the little Fellow that was in the house the last time you was up there that day we started…Mary A. Snapp…".
