War-date letter, 2 1/3pp. 8vo., written, on official "U. S. Christian Commission" stationery, by U.S. Christian Commission Agent William Van Wagenen, "City Point, Va., 8 A. M., July 28, 1864," to his mother, reads, in part: "…had one of my old headaches. The Dr. gave me chloroform…next day I was taken sick, threatened with fever. The Dr. keeps me in bed until Tuesday & since then I have been crawling around…Sat. night I had another headaches & had to take chloroform three times. If I do not get all right soon I shall come home. I had to give orders & attend to my work the 1st & 2nd day I was sick…two men have been appointed to for the work etc. I had to do…I expect then to be assigned to the extreme front…I must lie down now…Willie." Some spotting, else VG.
