WINSLOW, John Ancrum (1811-1873) was an officer in the United States Navy during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. He was in command of the steam sloop of war USS Kearsarge during her historic 1864 action off Cherbourg, France with the Confederate sea raider CSS Alabama. Document Signed "Jno. A Winslow" on Gulf Squadron letterhead, Pensacola bay, march 12, 1867, as Commodore Commanding Gulf Squadron, aboard the US Flag Ship, Estella. Winslow orders the transfer of a Mate to the Paul Jones". the order is docket by "W.E. Fitzhugh Commander". FITZHUGH, William A (1832-1889) entered the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis on Nov 20 1848 at the age of 15. He graduated with honors. He is best remembered for his capture of the Confederate Ironclad Missouri in June of 1865.
