A rare (loyal) Virginia Mounted soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Thomas S. Eichbaum 2nd Virginia Mounted Infantry (5th West Virginia Cavalry), Martinsburg, (West) Va., Jan. 19, 1863, to his father, requesting that his send him a gallon of whiskey in oysters, "so the Custom House chaps would not get it. Also, four or five pounds of sweet chewing tobacco and one lbs. of smoking tobaccoàwe will be paid in a day or two and I can then reimburse you for the stuffà. send the box by expressàno one knows when we may moveàthe horses are not shod yetàThos. S. Eichbaum, 2nd Regt. Va. M. Infty., Martinsburg, W. Virginia." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Both near fine.
