Confederate soldier correspondence group of twenty-three (23) war-date letters and several post war letters by Farish Carter Furman (1846-1883) who served in White's Battalion of South Carolina Artillery, the letters are dated 1861-1883 and conclude with a letter of sympathy pertaining to Furman's death. The war-date letters are mostly written from the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, and read in part: "... [4/14/1861] I suppose ...the glorious news of the taking of Fort Sumter, without any killed, has reached yore; this will be somewhat of a damper on the abolitionists and if Ben. McCulloch takes Washington, they will be still more surprised the assertion of the rights of the Southern Confederacy. I think that after we take Fort Pickens as we most assuredly will do, that a treaty will be made between the United and Confederate States and that the matter will end there...[5/24/64] The enemy advanced in force on our pickets driving them in but after remaining all night on the island he retreated to his boats...I am afraid of country fever but we take a quinine pill every evening and I do not expose myself any more than possible...[7/3/64] We are to start for James Island in a few moments...uncertain whether we are to remain or bring prisoners back. One hundred & fifty Yankees were taken there last night in attempting to storm our batteries. There is a large force several thousand of them on the Island..." Much more. Most very good or better condition.
