A touching war-date Unionist letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Julia A. Manning, sister of underage Charles R. Manning who, the day before volunteered as drummer boy in the 12th New Hampshire, to her sister concerning their fifteen -year-old brother's enlistment in the army, in part: "àCharlie has enlisted as Drummer boy. What do you think of that? We feel very bad but he wanted to go so bad we thought we would give our consent. He gets four hundred dollars bounty and 13 dollars a month. Charlie wants to see Pap before he goes very much. Why wont you try and come up before he goes? I don't know when he will have to go but I suppose in about a fortnightàyou must excuse me from writing anymoreàfor I don't feel very smart. Come if you can wont youàlove from your sister Julia A. Manning. Please write if you do not come." A model soldier, Manning achieved the rank of corporal before being discharged in December, 1865. Some spotting (from tear drops) effect the first page, else VG.
