A rare 20th Maine execution letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Linnekin, Co. K, 20th Maine Vols., Culpeper, Va., Sept. 18, 63, reading, in part: "àwe are in camp about 5 miles from Culpeperàwe crossed the Rappahannock last WednesdayàI have been to see a man shot since I begin this letter. He belonged to the 12th N. Y. Regt. He was very calmàthey marched him to his grave behind his coffin and [he] sat down [on] the coffinàthey put a handkerchief over his eyesàthe order was [was] fireàthere was 10 men fired and killed him dead. This war is a [too] dreadfulàI hope it will soon close. There will be many a glad heart when that hour comesàJohn Linnekin." Linnekin served in the 20th Maine, and most certainly at Gettysburg, until he lost his leg at the battle of the Wilderness and died on June 19, 1864. Minor toning, else VG
