K, 20th Maine Vols., "In camp near Winchester, Oct. 24, 63", reading, in part: "àwe may go to the Rappahannock [or] we may fall back to Bull Run again. We came across the Bull run battlefieldàthere was some of our boys that were never buried. There was one that sat against a tree and sat there 13 monthsàsome of them had their arms and some their head stuck out of the ground. I tell you this is a cruel war enyhow. Unless one is well and take care of him self and then he see some hard timesàI think that I shall not see eny more fighting this fall as old Lee is is across the Rappahannock andàwe will not chase him as our army is smallàsend me a fine comb in your next letter. I shall not go into the Battery. I shall stick to the old 20thàJoe." Linnekin served in the 20th Maine, and most certainly at Gettysburg, until he lost his leg at the battle of the Wilderness and died on June 19, 1864. The original transmittal cover is included.
