War-date Massachusetts home front, 5pp. 8vo., written by C. H. Allen, New Bedford, [Ma.], June 4, 1863, concerning worries on not herding from a usual soldier correspondent following the battle of Vicksburg, in small part: "àwhen will this terrible war cease & peace restored to our beloved country. God only knows. Heyward, Simon, [?] Green & Charlie are all in the Battle at Vicksburgàwe feel for their parentsàour own, J. A. P. Allen commands the sixth Co. Heavy Artillery National [Lt. Col. John A. P. Allen (1817-1893) Co. B, 3rd Mass. Heavy Artillery] at Clark Point for the defense of this place and now there [is] a company getting upàCivil War! is truly awful. Is longer than usual since we heard from HeywoodàSimon G. is promoted to adjutant of one of the color'd Regiments. We have daily papers from Cincinnati which give us more local matters on the subjectàI do the little I can at our 'Relief Society.' Have today a pert[?] supply of work. Our society I believe do their share, but it seems small to what many do. My health will not allow me to do as much as my inclinations promptsàC. H. Allen." Overall near fine.
