War-date Union officer's letter, 1 1/2pp. 4to., written by forty-year-old Captain William B. Kirk, Co. B, 126th Ohio Vols., April 19, 1863, Martinsburg, West Virginia, to his sons, reading, in part: "àmother & I are comfortably situated at Suter's. She got here yesterday by the noon trainàElla also except she is a little cross from her rideà[I] hope I may live to seeàthe mantle of peace is spread out over these United States and our glorious old flag unfurled to the breeze from every capitol in the Union. Then and not until then will I be willing to lay down my arms & return to my homeàwe have news last evening that Fairfax Court House is taken by our forces & that the Rebels are about to make a run down this valleyàlet them come we will give them a warm reception I do assure youàget Minor Hawell to cut that canser out of the mare's nose againàif it is not done she will die & if she dies from the operation let her go. It will not be the first mare that ever died. You can see fifty dead horses here in one hour's ride. I am still Permit officer & will be here in townàWm. B.
