A great war-date Union general's battle report written by battle of Ball's Bluff protagonist, CHARLES POMEROY STONE (1824-1887), 1p. oblong 12mo., "Before Petersburg, Va., Aug. 22d, 1864," to a certain "Mrs. Browne", reading, in part: "I arrived among the army in safety day before yesterday and joined my command. Have command of the Regular Brigade in the 5th Corps. The Corps had severe actions day before yesterday and yesterday inàwhich the enemy was badly beaten & driven off [the field.] We got many prisoners. The action of yesterday took place before I got up. Day before yesterday six out of seven of the officers were wounded. I am now the only officer of my regiment present with itàChas. P. Stone. (Over) Please address Col. C. P. Stone, Comdg. 1st Brigade, 2d Division, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac. C. P. S." General Stone was blamed for the Union debacle of Ball's Bluff. He was arrested and imprisoned until August 1862 without ever being formally charged and rumors flew that he was suspected of treason. It was not until May 1863 that he was given a position of responsibility, this time, as General Nathaniel Banks' chief of staff. He was mustered out of volunteer service in April 1864, but returned to the army during the siege of Petersburg, this time as a colonel in the Regular Army. Humiliated he lasted only three weeks (Aug. 21, through Sept. 13, 1864) until he resigned as brigade commander in the 5th Corps. After the war, he served as lieutenant general in the Egyptian army and chief engineer for the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. Overall near fine.
