War-date Union Brevet Brigadier General's letter written by then Colonel BENJAMIN FRANKLIN FISHER (1834-1915) as Chief Signal officer to his friend BBG William Watts Hart Davis, 4pp. 8vo., "Hd. Qrs. A. P., Dec. 9th 1864, reading, in part: "àI also longàfor the tranquility and enjoyments of civil life, but my destiny seems to lead me in the opposite directionàI was thinkingàabout resigning after the Fall campaignàbut they have so loaded me with honoràthat my duty is to remain in the service. They commissioned me a major in July. A Brevet Lt. Col. of the date of August 1st and Chief Signal officer with the rank of Col. U. S. A. from Dec. 3d. What they will do with me now I do not knowàorder me to Washington, but just as likely to keep me in the field especially since the rank was given me for service in the fieldàthe military status in this vicinity took a more lively turn a few days since. Warren with a sufficient force to guard against mishaps is off upon an expedition tearing up the Weldon Rail Roadàhe may be back tomorrowàthe enemy no doubt brought Early's forces from the Valley expecting a general attack from us. A collision may take place tomorrowàwe are all under arms and on the alertàthe coldnessàinterferesàwith the comfort of the soldiers, but they will be able to stand itàtruly your friend, B. F. Fisher." Very negligible residual mounting residue effecting last page, else near fine.
