A great war-date official Union army document, 1p. 8vo., printed "in the field" at the "Headquarters, Tenth Army Corps, near Hatcher's Run, Va., July 25, 1864, being General Orders No. 18," reading, in part: "àthe design adopted for the badge of the Corps, is the trace of a four bastioned fortàand will be worn on the top of the cap, or side of the hat, by all the officers and enlisted men of the Corpsàthe badge will be cut from red cloth for the 1st Divisionà[lists the other divisions correspondingly]àthe chief Q. M. will procureàthe cloth to supply the badge to divisions and stencils to cut the cloth and also mark the transportation of the CorpsàBy command of Major General David B. Birneyà".
