HOOKER, Joseph (1814 - 1879) was an American Civil War general for the Union, chiefly remembered for his decisive defeat by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. Autograph Letter Signed "Joseph Hooker, Maj. Genl". Two pages, 5-1/2" x 8-3/4", Aston House, September 3, 1865. Writing to Henry B. Dawson: in full, "Dear Sir, by a re-perusal of your letter of the 9th of August, I fear that I have inadvertently been the cause of your not calling on me in regard to the rebel archives supposed to be in your village. If this is the case and you are awaiting a reply from me let this remove it. My first impression was that you were to see me without further correspondence. The papers to which you refer may be of very great importance to the Government & in consequence it should be the duty of every good citizen to assist in having them placed in its possession. Please assign my grateful acknowledgements for your information."
