A rare Vermont regimental history, entitled: "Sixteenth Regiment Vermont Volunteers. Reunions and Roster, 1878 and 1888.", published, in mustard paper wraps, 27pp. 8vo., by Argus and Patriot Printing House, Montpelier, VT., 1889. Contains an account of their service during the war, including a detailed account of their role in the epic battle of Gettysburg written by Col. W. G. Veazey, and the unit's roster. His account reads, in very small part: "àyou all remember the drenching showers of the first day of July, we marched from Emmetsburg to Gettysburgàwe heard the distant roar of battleàthe next dayàopened hot and sultry, we lay behind the crest of a hill drying ammunitionàdodging the shellsàback through the roar and tumultàpoured the broken columnsàas I rode up and down the line that night, strewnàwith dead and woundedàthe piteous cries for helpàthe most trying nightàever experiencedàyou remember how well we hugged the ground while an average of 600àcannon and bursting shellàroared in our earsàyou wheeled out and formed on the left of the 13th and moved on the rebel flank firing as you advancedàin the movement we had made, and in capturing prisoners, the regiment had become very much broken. The appearance of this new forceàmade it necessary foràdecided action on our partàI decided instantly to make the change and chargeàGen. Stannardàat first thought it was impossibleàI stepped in front of you and said, 'Men are you ready for a charge?' Your shout of responseàcould be heard from Virginia to Vermontàyou reached his flank andàcapturing regiment after regimentàstand after stand of colorsàthe whole line disappearedàthe battle of Gettysburg was victoriously closed by the sons of Vermontàit was at this time that Lieutenant Lawton, that accomplishedàyoung officer fellà". Near fine.
