A nicely illustrated sheet music rendition of "New England! New England!" Published by F. D. Benteen, Baltimore and William T. Mayo, New Orleans, 1844, reworked, ca. July, 1861, following the South's first victory at battle of First Manassas, by a pro-Southern Shenandoah Valley Virginian as, "Virginia! Virginia!" Cleverly, our intrepid loyal Southern lady struck out the secondary title of "My Home Over the Sea" with "Home of The Free" while also crossing out the name of the original author's name, Anna M. Wells and adding "A Lady of the valley of Va." The complete four pages of piano tune song lyrics have been likewise altered to read, in part: "Three cheers for Virginia, home of the freeàyour soil is invaded by tyrants & thieves. Your fields once so brilliant, now gloomy with their graves. Virginia! Virginia! three cheers for VirginiaàVirginia, the battles began. We've fought the Northern army & victory we have wonàto arms go brave son's & fly to the field. Your names shall be Victory & courage be your shield. Trust in your Godà& be ready for his call. Three cheers for Virginia & sweet Liberty." Disbound from song book, with light soiling, and minor spotting, else VG to near fine.
