A great war-date multi-color lithograph of the Confederate POW camp at Rock Island, Illinois that opened in December, 1863 to accommodate a major influx of Rebel prisoners captured at the battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, Tennessee. Rock Island is a three mile long, half mile wide island in the middle of the Mississippi River. At the time of the war, it was government owned. The prison consisted of 84 barracks surrounded by a stockade. A lack of sufficient water supply, sanitation drainage and poor rations led to many to compare the deficient conditions at Rock Island to Andersonville. The lithograph is, entitled: "Prison Barracks and Hospital at Rock Island, Illinois," published by F. Morse, Philadelphia, measuring 8 1/2" x 11". The prison's barracks with surrounding stockade dominate the scene foreground with the barracks for the guards in front. The prison's two hospitals, one for guard's and the other for the prisoners appear in the distance. Also on the far horizon can be seen the city of Rock Island. Near fine.
