A complete and authentic issue of Gentleman’s Magazine, London, disbound, VG. This March 1755 issue is 44 pages and contains a pullout copper engraving of a rare statue described in part, “...three annexed figures are a true representations of the front; back, and side views of a very uncommon image, or statue, presented to an English gentleman, by a Greek patriarch at Smyrma, near 30 years ago ....” The engraving shows the front to be man and back to be a women. Also, a fascinating report from the interior whereby a number of ailments are being cured in Stockholm through use of Electricity. Examples include curing several people of deafness. The Gentleman's Magazine was founded in London, England, by Edward Cave in January 1731. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years, until 1922. Cave, who edited The Gentleman's Magazine under the pen name "Sylvanus Urban", was the first to use the term magazine (meaning "storehouse") for a periodical. Contributions to the magazine frequently took the form of letters, addressed to "Mr. Urban". The iconic illustration of St. John's Gate on the front of each issue (occasionally updated over the years) depicted Cave's home, in effect, the magazine's "office".
