A good war-date Confederate partisan ranger's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles M. M[?], Co. H, 18th Virginia Cavalry [a.k.a., the 62nd Virginia and the nucleus for Mosby's and McNeil's Partisan Ranger commands], Rockingham Co., Va., August 19, 1863, to his friend "Miss. Mary H. Long", reading, in part: "I do hope you have not forgot me-direct your letter to me Company H, 18 [Virginia Cavalry] regiment. Mary, we have been every day most we marched up the Valley but now we are on a march, I think, to Morefield or Winchester-I never knew what it was to soldier-if we don't march down through Hampshire [County, Va.] in the course of a month or two I will come home. Anyhow in that time I would like to no if in case the Yankees should be through there if you would cum up on the mountain anywhere so I could see you-I have been very lonesome today-Mary, now please answer this letter-Mary, I have not seem a pretty girl since I left Hampshire but I have seem some of the largest girls that ever I saw-". A bit light, else very good.
