Although this 4pp. letter is signed “Husband” it is written by Charles Miles Figgatt who was mustered into "B" Co. VA 1st Cavalry and was detailed 9/20/1862 Gen Jackson's & Early's Hqs as clerk. The letter is date lined, Hd Qrs 2nd Corp A.N.Va., Hagerstown Md., July 7, 1863. Ammole came out and was struck on the head and states that the same ball wounded Tom. ... Tom was wounded on the last day of the fight and not far from Gettysburg and thus stands a good chance of getting his wounds dressed ...we took up quarters in the barracks. Jno Ammen and W. Camper with some others I did not know, were wounded.Capt. Allen’s old Co. lost heavily. Major Wilson was killed and Pickets Div. suffered more I suppose than any ... losing nearly all its officers in killed wounded and captured. ... The fight lasted three days beginning on the 1st. On the first day we drove the enemy several miles, killing & capturing. I think not less than 1000, which we did not suffer heavily ... they fell back to a ridge of rocky hills ... from which it was impossible to dislodge them... it being a place of unusual strength and against our noble army ... many, very many lost their lives and many wounded ...”
