Document Signed, "E.P. George, Captain", a completely manuscript document, 36" x 21" on necessity paper and framed. Titled, "Return of provisions issued and received at Pitch Landing NC during the month of April 1864 by Captain E.P. George". Extraordinary detailed account of provisions; as example, 14180 pounds of cotton, 23784 pounds of tobacco, 33404 pounds of corn ... listing 48 commodities in all. Additionally, the report shows which items were distributed and to whom, 34 distributions. Pitch Landing, a Confederate commissary in Hertford County along the Chowan River, was targeted by Union troops December 2-6, 1864. Union troops took a large amount of goods including pork, coffee, salt, candles, and beef that were intended for Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The most valuable of the provisions, 85 bales of cotton, were also taken while warehouses were burned and horses shot.
