Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., [n. p., but Fairfax Seminary, Va.], Monday evening, Nov. 24, 1862," to Asa, his younger brother, reading, in part: "-you think you would like to be here to hunt rabbits do you? - but wouldn't you be afraid that the Rebels would get you? There are two boys in our Regt. that are no larger than you. One is waiter for a captain & the other a drummer. George Crissey has a drum - he knocked the head in a few days ago but has had it mended since. He sits by me while I am writing to you engaged in reading the New Jersey Herald. You ask concerning our guns - we have the common army musket. We are obliged to keep them very clean. I spend a half hour every day in polishing it & the brass on my accoutrements. I have a sergeant's sword. It is straight & somewhat nicer than the one I borrowed of Gill Drew-Chas. J. Backster." Minor soiling, else VG.
