Pencil note, 5” x 3”, in full, “Lieut. Levenworth, Sir, It is reported to me that one man who was detailed for picket this morning did not come out. He fell out after the guard march from Hd Qtr declaring that he would not go on picket to day. His name is Joseph Wells, Co. B., 96th NY Vols. Herman Jefferson.” On the reverse, in ink, in full, “Hd Qrs 2 Brig, 24th Corps, Army of James, In the field, Dec. 11/64. Respectfully referred to the Provost Marshal who will cause this man to be arrested and his place to be supplied by a new detail from the same command. Abel Leavenworth.”Joseph Wells enlisted on 10/8/1861 at Plattsburg, NY as a Private, mustered into "B" Co. NY 96th Infantry. He Re-enlisted on 1/1/1864 and was Mustered Out on 2/6/1866 at City Point, VA.
