A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., Drummondtown, [Va.], August 21, 1864, written to his wife, in part: "It is with a heavy heart that I write - I feel disappointed very much indeed as our time is out and this is the 21st of the month and still there is no transportation for us. The Baltimore and Ohio Road is torn up and the Pennsylvania Central is jammed with other regiments. We must wait our turn - though I confess it is with poor patience - Abe is well like myself -while we are the unwilling subjects of broken faith on the part of the government as we feel that we have finished our part of the contract and want what is our rights simply to have transportation to our homes - Mary, we have some sad cases here. Sunday we followed the remains of Wm. Brown to the grave and Oh the sad thought of weeping wife and orphan babes as we buried him in the distant land far from those he loved - the War Department have issued orders that no person shall be removed until the first of October so of course he cannot be sent home before that time when the company propose to remove his remains home to his native state - James O. Johnson." Minor soiling, else VG.
