The brother of Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., writes a letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo.,"Cherry Grove, [Ohio], June 18, 1864," to his soldier brother, in small part: "We received your last. Its receipt renders us happy to learn you are all well - we are glad to hear that the 138th will refuse to go into the fight. You can keep out of it if you - all protest. You do not know what an influence a regiment has when the[y] protest. You might as well die where you are as to be led right up to those works to be shot down - I suppose you know that Vallandigham is at home and going to remain there - there will be no doubt but what you will get to come home when your 100 days are out. If not it will be an outrage - I will close with the exclamation! Hurrah for Brough. Tell Abe never to cease hollowing for the old miscreant - C. C. Johnson." Also included is the original transmittal cover addressed: "Mr. James O. Johnson, Company H, 138 Regt. N. G., Col. Fisher, Care of Capt. Kline. Washington, D. C." Light soiling, else VG.
