New York Volunteers, Col. S. G. Hathaway, Company E, Trinity Gen. Hospital, [Washington], Nov. 30, 1862," to his parents, reading in part: "-I am in the hospital yet at Washington but I am getting better now. I have had a few ague shakes since I have been here - I was out in the city yesterday and bought three pictures and drew a [?] with them. The pictures I will send home for ma to hang in the parlor or where she pleases. My prize was asset of cameo ear rings and breast pin. Things here are very high. Butter is worth 30 cents a pound. Our Regt. - was encamped at Miner's Hill. They have been brigaded and are under marching orders -we had Thanksgiving furnished by the citizens. We had turkey, chicken, oyster soup, potatoes, 4 or 5 kinds of pie - Burnside will make them skedaddle before long. I have got some gay old medicine to take now - M. Walker." The original stamped patriotic transmittal cover (damaged) is included. Negligible spotting, else VG.
