Union soldier's war-date battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., Acworth, Ga., June 13, 1864, to his parents, reading in part: "-I am yet alive and right side up - I told you before we whipped them (the rebus) the 15th of May and followed them until the 23rd without anything worthy of note and that day we came up to them - they rather fooled our generals in battle. They made a stand some ways in front of their batteries and had them masked back in the woods. When the fight commenced they fell back to their batteries and breastworks. Our forces thought they was giving them pressed until they got up very close. When they opened with grape and canister and made it rather hot for us. Our Division was in the advance and lost heavy. Our Regt. was lucky and lost but 18 in killed and wounded - the Regt. is getting pretty small. Co. E has but 8 privates for duty and 6 non commissioned officers and commissioned officers rather small isn't it. We lay here facing the enemy - ever since the fight they have been skirmishing - on some parts of the line our pickets and the rebus have been on friendly terms - they have exchanged [news]papers, talked together etc. but it is getting so that you can hear guns almost anytime now - we will have a big fight soon - George Roberts is sick. He was taken back to the hospital last Thursday. He is pretty worn out and has the has the [?] a common complaint in the army. Our grub is plentiful - Pilot bread (or hardtack), coffee, sugar, pork and sometimes fresh beef -are our rations - we are within six miles of Acworth. We hold it. It is a little town on the railroad. We are within 10 miles of Marietta and 30 of Atlanta - Mark." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Light toning, else near fine.
