McGAHAN, Thomas Riley (1825-1905) He enlisted in the Calhoun Guards (1st South Carolina Rifle Regiment), but was forced to leave due to ill-health. He subsequently became a successful blockade runner, serving aboard several vessels before the close of the war. He was on the Cecille when she sank and was on the Confederate cruiser Fox when she ran into Galveston in broad daylight through the Federal blockade. Autograph Letter Signed "T.R. McGahan" as president of Sea Island Steam Boat Co., dateline Charleston, February 3, 1885, paying his tax.
