Federal soldier's six letter written by Frank Weir of the 96th Illinois Infantry. In essence Weir kept a running "diary" of his action beginning Friday Sept. 17th, 1863, "On picket this morning we can hear brisk firing in front. ... we advance about 3 miles & stop on the road as 'Picket Reserve'. Firing continues. ... Sept. 19th "Lay on our arms last night shivering with cold ... In the fight last evening, our reg't lost 1 killed & 2 wounded. ... Sept. 20th "Heavy heard to our right so we move in that direction, double quick. The Rebs are retreating and we are following .. About 1 o'clock we are formed on Thomas's right, and immediately charge the enemy, but they are too well posted. We make several more charges, driving the enemy at some points, but failed to clear the field. Night setting, both armies retire from the field. Our loss in killed wounded & missing is near 200. ... Sept. 21st "The Yanks charged and captured 3 guns." ... Sept 24th "Our forces evacuated Lookout this morning and the Rebs now occupy it, which brings them with gunshot of us and we are trying every mark of this kind." Sept. 25th "One man wounded today. .. the Rebs charged our works but were repulsed with severe loss."
