ELY, Alfred (1815-1892) was a U.S. Representative from New York. He was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses (1859-863), serving New York's 29th congressional district. Ely was captured by Confederate forces while spectating the First Battle of Bull Run. Stock Certificate Signed by "Alfred Ely" as president. The Sea Island Company certificate is issued to Levi Davenport 3 shares, September 3, 1864. The cert displays a slave carrying cotton. Revenue stamp at top left. Major & Knapp, NY, printer. Sea Island, off the coast of Georgia, is part of a long chain of barrier islands, also known as "sea islands", located along the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas. Sea Island cotton was grown on these islands.
