Gourdin”,dateliuned Charleston, Setember 6, 1861, 2pp., written to Mann S. Valentine who funded the famous Valentine Museum in Richmond. In part, “Is it not lamentable that so many generally intelligent and respectable in the Northern states should have been duped into taking and active part in this wicked invasion of the South? ... The North has under-valued our resources and our manhood, and we are in a measure to blame for this mistake. Its aggressions and our submission to them have been co-equal with the imaginations of the Federal overnment, and we have so invaribly comprimised away our Constitutional right and abandoned our interest at the bidding of the North, that it has at last grown to believe us incapable of resisistance to its grossest inactions and prepared for any degree of huniliations...” ... He continues regarding a Yankee prisoner held in Libby, “I will be obliged would you give this young gentleman your care, should he require it ... Mr. King’s uncle, Bishop Dehon of our state was universally beloved ...” On the reverse, “In answer to an inquirery in regard to a Yankee prisoner-wounded & in the Libbey prison”.
