LEE, Samuel Jones (1844-1895) was an American Civil War veteran of the Confederacy, politician and lawyer from South Carolina. He served as the first African-American Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives and was a committed member of the Republican Party. When he was sixteen Lee followed McGowan and served with the Confederate Army during the Civil War, although there is no official record of his service; however, he was photographed armed and in the uniform of McGowan's regiment, the 14th South Carolina Infantry. Lee claimed that he was wounded twice during the course of the war: once at Second Manassas, where McGowan was also wounded, and then again at the Battle of Hanover. Manuscript Document Signed “S.J. Lee” Court document, 2pp., May 29th 1878, resolving a land division of the Mansfield Plantation. Spanning 1000 acres, Mansfield Plantation was once one of the largest rice producing plantation in the country. Mansfield, along with adjacent rice plantations up and down the Black River, provided much of Europe with "Carolina Gold" rice during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Records show that by 1860 there were over 100 slaves that planted 235 acres of rice at Mansfield. Six slave houses and a slave chapel remain.
