COBB Thomas Reade Rootes (1823-1862) was an American lawyer, author, politician, and Confederate States Army officer, killed in the Battle of Fredericksburg during the American Civil War. He was the brother of noted Confederate statesman Howell Cobb. Cobb organized Cobb's Legion in the late summer of 1861 and was commissioned a colonel in the Confederate army on August 28, 1861. The Legion was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia. It took heavy losses during the Maryland Campaign. He was promoted to brigadier general on November 1, 1862, but this promotion was not confirmed by the Confederate Congress. Autograph Letter Signed “Tho R.R. Cobb”, 1pp., written to Col. John B. Lamar with original cover. Datelined, Montgomery, Feb 28, 1861. In large part, “You misunderstood me about Judge Nisbet - I intended to sasy in my letter that he was going to stay at a private house. Since writing you , Mr. Barton invites me to his house but I prefer to keep a room at the hotel. ... I do not see how we can do anything in this Congress. It must be done by the state legislatiors ... I will see you at Savannah .... Tho R.R. Cobb”. The accompany original cover has circle cancellation from “Montgomery Feb. 26” with an additional free frank “T.R. Cobb” signature. The Provisional Constitution was unanimously ratified around midnight on February 8, 1861. It was signed by all members present at noon on the day of Jefferson Davis's inaugural address, February 18, 1861.
