A good Federal soldier’s Letter written by Eben E. Colby who on 8/22/1863 mustered into "G" Co. ME 4th Infantry. The three page letter is datelined Camp Near Catlet Station Virginia, October 25, 1863. In part “Everything is quiet along the line the Rebels are not far from here ...I was reading a piece in onbe that a fellow had in our company. It was about some of Abram’s nigro solgiers where they murdered or rather massacred a whole family of whites, dam em. They all ought to be burned at the stake.What in the hell will this country come to if the negros are all free. ... I am going to leave this country one of these days. I wish to god that Abraham and all his followers was in hell. ...”
