HARRIS, Isham Green (181801897) was an American politician who served as the 16th governor of Tennessee from 1857 to 1862, and as a U.S. senator from 1877 until his death. Harris endorsed John C. Breckinridge for president in 1860, and warned that the state must consider secession if the "reckless fanatics of the north" should gain control of the federal government.[13] Following Lincoln's election in November, Harris convened a special session of the legislature on January 7, 1861, which ordered a statewide referendum on whether or not Tennessee should consider secession. Autograph Letter Signed “Isham G. Harris” with receipt endorsement by “J.D” (President Jefferson Davis), 4pp., . Datelined Tuscumbia Ala., December 25th, 1864. In part, “Our stay in Tennessee short and engagements so constant and pressing that we did not recruit to any considerable extent. If we could have remained a few weeks longer we could and would have recruited to great extent. The men were there and thousands were their arrangements to join the army but the unfortunate result of the battle of Nashville and immediate retreat of the army was very discouraging to our people. ... I have been with General Hood from the beginnning of this campaign and beg to say, disasterous as it ended. I am not able to see anything that Genl Hood has done that he should not or neglected anything he should have done which was possible to do. ... I have seen and known of him and his policy, the more I have been pleased with him and regret to say that if all had performed their parts as well as he, the results would have been difgferent. .... that if Henl. Hood is to command this army, he should by all means be permitted to organize the army according to his own views of the necessities of the case. Very Respectfully, Isham G. Harris”. On the reverse, President Jefferson Davis adcises, “File- send one to Genl. Hood. J.D.”.
