Good letter group of Federal soldier Abraham Young who enlisted 11/12/61 as a 1st Lieutenant into Co. B of the Pa. 101st Inf. and was discharged 11/2/62 for health issues. He was fortunate. The 101st ended up in Plymouth NC where the whole regiment was captured, the majority going to Andersonville. The five letters include: Camp Curtin, Jan. 6, 1862, 1pp., in part, “The Colonel thinks I will get appointed recruiting officer for six months & if that be the case I will see you oftener ... the more the Colonel sees me the more he likes me and I think I will be favored ... I have drawn guns for the boys ... They got the rifle and best gun in service ...” ... plus, Camp Curtin, Feb. 1, 1862, 2pp.,. Abram attended a funeral and says “It was the most solemn of all places I ever attended in my life”. ... plus, Camp Winfield Scott, Near Yorktown Virginia (April 1862) 4pp., in part “... we had a good deal of trouble yeasterday with the Rebels, for every time we showed ourselves they fired .. They fired at me & when I saw the smoke of their guns, I would jump behind a tree and the bullets would shower around me &sometimes they would hit the tree that I stood behind. ...It is different today for we took five forts without shooting a gun. The men that was firing so rapidly at me, Martin Mare got around & shot two of them dead. Thankthe Lord. .... we shelled them out of Yorktown yesterday & last night. I heard some of the heaviest guns fired last night I ever heard or ever expect to hear. It was continual fire from yesterday one o’clock until this morning about four, then it stopped. They left flour, meat .. great many blankets ... They took these cap shells & stuck them in the sand so when our men & horses stepped on them they would explode & kill them. There was some men belonged to a NY regiment got killed & wounded. One man stepped on one of those delilish machines & it explodsed & killed one man and wounded three. .... plus, Hope Church, May 11, ‘62, 2pp., in part, “I traveled all day & did not get anything to eat..I went toan old planter house where the old planter and his wife had gone and left the overseer and his wife & I went in & told them I wanted them to get me something to eat. ... she went to work or the Darkey went to work & got me ham & eggs & biscuits & coffee ... She got afraid of her niggers & wanted me to stay until they went away but I told her I could not ... I spoke of the story of the Merrimac being blowed up ... The Rebels blowed it up so we could not get it in our hands & two other boats with it. ....” plus, Sunday on the Water On Board of the Steamer Lonf Branch, Sept. 28 ‘62, 1pp., in part “I wrote you yesterday when on my way to Fortress Monroe ... they sent me to Yorktown ... We may have to take a flag of truce & go to Richmond with Rebel prisoners. I cannot tell. ... I hope they will keep me at it all the time for I am so lame that I could not march if I was with the regiment & as long as they keep me at this business, I will stay & when I have tom go back to the regiment, I will tender my resignation ...”
