Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Orderly Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Camp Burnside near Newport News, Mar. 15, 1863," to his family, reading, in part: "-no money is used or will pass here but Greenbacks. There is considerable talk - relative to reenlisting this regiment - to reenlist it under the old officers - there will be a number who will again serve their country, but the majority are in favor of returning home - there is a great deal of talk concerning the coming draft. I am sorry it is necessary to call so many more men in the field & am yet glad there is a draft impending just because of the unhappiness & discomfort it will occasion Northern Copperheads. Those who are true patriots will not fear it - some of the citizens of Vernon (whose patriotism is questionable) will experience more trouble in avoiding this draft than the one last fall - Charles J. Baxter." Light spotting and soiling, else VG.
