A good Federal soldier’s letter written by Jonathon E. Pillsworth who enlisted 8/10/1864 in Co. A. NY 56th Infantry. The letter is datelined Mount Pleasant, So. Ca., May 3, 1865. In part, “We have been out on a raid for the past month and just got back. ... we had marched about 25 miles a day. This has been a very destructive raid and right through the heart of South Carolina. We destroyed grat amounts of cotton, railroads, thirty one engines, three hundred cars loaded with stores of all kinds, besides all the houses, barns, mills, and wverything on our march.This is the way we do business in this country ...”
