Group of Union League documents includes: Letter to Governor Brownlow of New York, September 12, 1866, inviting him to speak, with newspaper clipping stating that Benson Lossing and Phillip Hamilton were to meet with the Southern Loyalists at the meeting...; plus, the HYMN for the UNION LEAGUE, four stanzas. ... plus, four checks issued to James L. Claghorn (for the Sinking Fund) in $500, $1000, $1000 and $1500 in a period envelope identified as Sinking Fund Unjion League. Very good condition. Claghorn, James L. (James Lawrence), 1817-188, was an art collector, patron, an officer of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. The Union League of Philadelphia, founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the policies of Abraham Lincoln, is today a private members-only club.
